Something about yourself
SYNOPSIS
Marcus Molina is interning at a political campaign office for the ostensibly popular Humanist party. The anniversary of his dad’s disappearance on his birthday is coming up, and it starts to affect his relationships at work. At the same time that his best friend, Liam, tries to confide in him with a secret, their boss, Laura, starts having Marc take on more work for the party. Tensions rise, friendships strain, and Marc learns a hard truth about Humanists, and about what really happened to his father all those years ago. Consequently, he must decide whether supporting cannibalism is worth promoting his career and personal goals, as well as losing his friend.
CHARACTERS
Marcus is a 21-year-old Hispanic male interning for Senator Turner Price’s office. Politically, he is moderate—he mainly wants to promote his own interests as a first-generation American. He avoids arguments, and he has some values regarding family and friendship, but his broader worldview is not fixed in any way.
Liam is a determined individual who believes he can make a difference from within “the system” by working for the dominant party and trying to inspire policy changes. He is Marc’s childhood friend and comes from a similar background, though their lived experiences are different.
June is a social media intern at the office. She is brash and unapologetically herself, but also highly judgmental and transactional in her relationships. Though she cares about helping others, she is often unwilling to make compromises; if a line is crossed, she is not one to forgive.
Laura is a seasoned Humanist party staff member sent to the office to help the campaign succeed. She wears many faces depending on which character she is talking to, since she sees something useful in all of them. She is 30, and though she is not well-liked, she is respected by those who know her.
Derek is a policy advisor at the office. His undiplomatic nature makes him seem unfit for the position, but he was placed there because of it. He is not taken seriously by the interns because they think he’s foolish and uninvolved, but his apathy is what makes him dangerous.
